The global plastic crisis is a growing threat to our planet, with millions of tons of plastic waste ending up in our oceans every year. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a swirling mass of plastic debris in the North Pacific Ocean, has grown to twice the size of Texas and continues to expand.
Shockingly, it is estimated that by 2050, there could be more plastic in our oceans than fish. Urgent action is needed to address this crisis, including reducing plastic consumption, increasing recycling efforts, and finding innovative solutions for plastic waste management. It's time for us to take responsibility for our actions and protect our planet for future generations.
“I first thought of Refilled in February 2021 in the middle of Covid-19 pandemic.
I’d finished a workout at the gym and was thirsty, so I headed to the bubbler to refill my bottle and grab some water, but unfortunately it was out of order. Frustrated, I walked over to the wall of fridges and vending machines where I knew I could get something. What I saw SHOCKED me. There was an illuminated wall of bottled waters, soft drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks and protein shakes. There would have been thousands of them all waiting to be consumed and ultimately discarded. So I bought one and left the gym, now carrying two bottles in hand, one of them empty and one full. Within about 3 minutes both bottles were empty again and my stainless steel one when back into my bag unused. As I looked for a recycling bin I started to wonder, “why do we need this bottle? I could have just refilled instead.” The worst part is, after looking around for a while I couldn’t find a yellow recycling bin, so I threw it into a red one and off to landfill it went.
It was that afternoon I went home and started working on Refilled.”
